Does Secondary Glazing Reduce Condensation on Windows?

What Actually Causes Condensation

Condensation forms on a surface, like glass, when there's a temperature difference between the two sides, combined with enough humidity in the air on the warmer side. The point at which moisture in the air condenses onto that surface is called the dew point.

These two factors work together. If the humidity in a room is very high, you don't need a large temperature difference for condensation to form. Equally, if humidity is at a fairly normal level but it's very cold outside, that larger temperature gap alone can be enough to bring the glass surface below the dew point, and condensation forms on the inside, even without unusually damp air.

Why Secondary Glazing Helps

A single-glazed window only has one surface separating outside air from room air, so the full temperature difference sits across that one pane. Adding secondary glazing, or double glazing, changes this by introducing a second surface with a layer of trapped air in between.

As an example: on a cold day it might be 0°C outside, but the trapped air between your Retro Pane and your original window could sit at around 10°C, while the room itself is at a comfortable 20°C. Instead of a 20-degree difference across a single pane, the room-facing surface now only has a 10-degree difference to contend with. That smaller gap meaningfully reduces the likelihood of the room-facing surface dropping below the dew point, so condensation on the inside of your window becomes less likely.

It Reduces the Risk. It Doesn't Remove It Completely

Condensation can still happen on the room-facing surface in the right conditions, particularly if it's especially cold outside and humidity indoors is high. This isn't unique to secondary glazing either: even modern triple-glazed windows can develop condensation in sufficiently cold, humid conditions. Reducing the temperature gap makes condensation less likely, but no type of glazing removes the underlying physics entirely.

The Rarer Case: Condensation Between the Pane and Your Original Window

This is a bit more troublesome simply because addressing it means removing the pane to deal with it directly.

This tends to be a rare occurrence, and when it does happen, it often clears on its own the same way it appeared. In most cases, the moisture doesn't come from the room at all. It's coming from the window itself, for example moisture already present in the wood of the original frame, working its way into the cavity we've created.
