Our surveyors speak with dozens of customers every day, and one of the most frequently asked questions is:
"How does Retro Glazing compare to other secondary glazing panels, like Gecko?"
Secondary glazing is not a new concept. In fact, it's been used for over a hundred years. A quick look through historic patents shows many references to sheet materials like acrylic being inserted—either temporarily or permanently—on the room-facing side of windows.
From a purely physical perspective, most secondary glazing products are based on the same principle: trapping a layer of air between two surfaces. Since air is a good insulator and doesn't circulate in this sealed gap, it helps to reduce heat loss and noise.
However, when comparing Retro Glazing vs. Gecko from a design standpoint, the differences become much more obvious.
At Retro Glazing, we went through many design iterations to develop a custom aluminium frame. This is where the real distinction lies.
Our unique aluminium frame allows us to integrate key features that clearly set us apart:
- A lip on the room-facing side that conceals the edge of the acrylic, giving it a cleaner finish. The subtle chamfer also complements the aesthetics of period homes far more effectively.
- A distinctive slant in the profile that acts like an optical illusion, further minimising the visual impact of the pane on your windows.
- Compared to others, our frame is not only narrower but also significantly stiffer, making it both less intrusive and more durable.
